Valentino seemingly kept his childhood innocence until the day where the SPLA shot several prisoners in front of him and the rest of the boy in his refugee camp. It was truly a disturbing scene, and to think that these men who were shot were more than likely innocent themselves is particularly more disturbing. To have to watch men be killed, rather than to just slip peacefully away has to have been extremely emotionally scarring for our narrator and that is why I believe it is this event where he lost his innocence.
