Bologna: Example of War's Toll
The Battle of Bologna in this novel is an excellent example of the toll that war takes on all the persons that are involved in the conflict because this particular battle is considered by all the soldiers involved to be a suicide mission. For the first time since this novel began the reader sees more characters in the story fearing for their lives than just Yossarian. The tension and the panic that is conveyed through chapters 11-15 demonstrates how brutal war really is while also showing how truly fragile life is for the Bombardiers on Pianosa really is.
