Valentino suffered through much in his time in Africa, running from armies, animals, and certain death all while being malnourished without his parents far from home. However, what strikes me the most is his statement that he had never been so victimized as he lay on the floor of his apartment beaten and bruised waiting for his robbers to leave him. It is disturbing to me that the Lost Boys held such high hopes that their lives would be better in America, yet so many become victims of our heinous crime rate. These men and women who come here looking for freedom only to be haggled and told to “Go back to Africa” is a disgrace to me, makes me somewhat hesitant to be proud of my country.
